GILA – Privacy Policy

The Guernsey International Legal Association (“GILA”) is committed to being a responsible custodian of the information you provide to us and the information we collect in the course of operating the association.

This Privacy Policy describes how GILA may collect, use, and share information, including in association with the operation of our main website (the “Online Services”).

The types of information we collect

Generally, you can use our Online Services without providing us with any personal information.

We collect information that you voluntarily provide to us, including when you communicate with us via email or other channels; when you submit an application for or request membership, when you sign up for an event; and when you respond to our communications or requests for information. We do not use browser cookies and similar technologies (collectively, “Cookies”) to collect and store certain information when you use, access, or interact with our Online Services.

We do not collect information about the type of device you use to access the Online Services, the operating system and version, your IP address, your general geographic location as indicated by your IP address, your browser type, the content you view and features you access on the Online Services, the web pages you view immediately before and after you access the Online Services, whether and how you interact with content available on the Online Services, and the search terms you enter on the Online Services.

Information from third party sources

We do not receive information about you from other sources (including third parties)

We do not receive information about you from social media platforms.

Precise location information

When you access the Online Services via a mobile device, we do not collect precise location information.

How we use the information we collect

We may use the information we collect:

  • To respond to your enquiries;
  • To operate the Online Services;
  • To send you newsletters, e-alerts and other updates, marketing communications, and other information or materials that may be of interest you or which you have expressed an interest in receiving;
  • To maintain our list of contacts; and
  • To assess the effectiveness of our events, promotional campaigns and publications.

How we may share the information we collect

GILA is a not for profit association.

We do not sell, rent, or otherwise share information that reasonably identifies you or your organisation with unaffiliated entities for their independent use except as expressly described in this Privacy Policy or with your prior permission. We may share information that does not reasonably identify you or your organisation as permitted by applicable law.

We may also disclose information we collect:

  • To third-party service providers that perform services on our behalf, such as web-hosting companies, mailing vendors, event hosting services, and information technology providers.
  • To law enforcement, other government authorities, or third parties (within or outside the jurisdiction in which you reside) as may be permitted or required by the laws of any jurisdiction that may apply to us. In these circumstances, we take reasonable efforts to notify you before we disclose information that may reasonably identify you or your organisation, unless prior notice is prohibited by applicable law or is not possible or reasonable in the circumstances.

We rely on the following legal grounds to process your personal information, namely:

  • Consent – We may use information as described in this Privacy Policy subject to your consent. To withdraw your consent to such use, you can contact us via our Contact Us page. Where required by applicable laws, we will rely on your consent for direct marketing.
  • Legitimate interests – We may use your personal information for our legitimate interests to improve our products and services and the content on our Online Services. Consistent with our legitimate interests and any choices that we offer or consents that may be required under applicable laws, we may use technical information as described in this Privacy Policy and use personal information for our marketing purposes.

We engage third parties that support the operation of our Online Services.

We retain the information we collect for no longer than is reasonably necessary to fulfil the purposes for which we collect the information and to comply with our legal obligations.

Your choices and rights

If you no longer wish to receive marketing communications from us, you can let us know by sending us an email via our Contact Us page. The electronic marketing communications we send you also contain opt-out mechanisms that allow you to opt-out from receiving those communications at any time. We will honour your choice and refrain from sending you such announcements. You may also opt back in to receive those communications at any time.

You may have certain rights regarding information that we have collected and that is related to you. We encourage you to contact us to update or correct your information if it changes or if you believe that any information that we have collected about you is inaccurate or out of date. You can also ask us to see what personal information we hold about you, to erase your personal information and you may tell us if you object to our use of your personal information.
